2024-06-01 11:46 AEST by Arthur Barrett - replace for howl/mdnsresponder?
Looking at the internet archive (wayback machine) we can see that howl was retired by 2017:
Howl is dead. Long live Howl.
If you're looking at this page, chances are you're trying to find a little 'ol Zeroconf implementation called Howl. Sadly, Howl is no longer actively developed by Porchdog Software or anyone else and you'll have to look elsewhere. Happily, you have some good selections to chose from these days. The dogs over here suggest you first have a look at Apple's Bonjour.
http://developer.apple.com/networking/bonjour/index.html
Bonjour runs on Mac OS X, Windows, *NIXes of assorted shapes and sizes, and VxWorks. It's great software, developed by some really gifted engineers, and we think you'll find it very easy to incorporate in your next world beating application.
If you're a *NIX person, you might want to take a peek at Avahi.
http://www.avahi.org/
We don't know too much about it, but it's getting a lot of uptake in the Zeroconf community and the guy who develops it is pretty sharp.

So that's about it for now. Thanks for the fun ride. We had a ball and look forward to having you join us for our next adventure. |

2024-06-01 11:47 AEST by Arthur Barrett - the original page looked like:
Howl is a cross-platform implementation of Zeroconf networking. Zeroconf brings a new ease of use to IP networking.
http://www.zeroconf.org/
Branded as Bonjour™ by Apple Computer, Inc., Zeroconf standardizes networking protocols for delivering hassle-free ad-hoc networking, service discovery and IP configuration. This ease of use, enjoyed by users of Mac OS X, is now available as an SDK for Windows 2000/XP and many flavors of Unix. Howl allows software developers to easily embed Zeroconf functionality in their applications, making cumbersome and error-prone network configuration tasks seem so five minutes ago. Give your users what they want. Give them simple, elegant networking. Give them Howl.
Howl is open-source and royalty-free. We ask only that any fixes or improvements you make are fed back to us so we can ensure that we provide the most stable, best-quality cross-platform software for Zeroconf/Bonjour networking.
If you have any further questions, please contact Porchdog support <howl@porchdogsoft.com> or join the Howl mailing list.

2024-08-01 17:20 AEST by Arthur Barrett - bonjour landing page seems to be here now:
https://developer.apple.com/bonjour/
SDK for windows:
https://developer.apple.com/download/all/?q=Bonjour%20SDK%20for%20Windows
Bonjour SDK for Windows v3.0 was released September 22, 2011
I have howl-1.0.0 sources on the cvsnt dev box. According to the wayback machine, the howl source code
never moved off 1.0.0
http://www.porchdogsoft.com/products/howl/download.html
I have x32 and x53 copies of howl and mdnsresponder DLL's, but they are not in sysfiles. The installer (WXS)
does not seem to reference howl or mdnsresponder, only mdnsclient which is part of CVSNT (originally from
nss-mdns but ported by Tony).
Based on this I think we don't really need to spend any moe effort on Howl at least not for CVSNT. |
