This is incorrect behaviour - the second commit should fail.

Patches - changes to Makefile.in too!

This patch includes changes to Makefile.in, but should really be made to
Makefile.am - but I can't really work out how to do that.  I suppose it could
mean I don't understant automake...

This patch also incudes changes to Audit to increase the information available
in the trace which affects all platforms.
